The Hallways: Zane & Alex
“Stress,” said Alex sagely, putting the book in his pack. It’s too late to get to class, but I don’t wanna look rude or anything… “I’ve been there myself. Can’t say I’ve had all that shit pile up at once, though, that’s the rough part. I wish I had some answers for you, but I just don’t.” He reached over and put a gentle hand on the student’s shoulder. Immediately he retracted his arm, wondering just what in seven hell’s he thought he was doing.
“Um, y-yeah…anyways, that’s terrible. I’ve noticed Ryker gone for awhile, too. It’s a real bummer. Can’t say I know much about Quidditch, though, never been much of a fan or a player. I’ve seen you play before in a few games, I think, and you weren’t half bad at all.” He was fishing for a compliment for Zane, even though he had never payed much attention to any of the handful of Quidditch games he had ever gone to. The guy looked like he needed one. “What, ah, what position are you again?
“I play beater. Best position to play to get the aggression out. I’m lucky. Ryker is my partner so we should make quite the combination on the pitch.” Zane had finally come back to his usual self. His bag wasn’t as heavy as before and he had no problem hoisting it up on his shoulder. “I’m glad I could help you with the book. Its a great class, some people just don’t understand the appeal. Are you going to head up to the class now?”
Well now, that would be the million dollar question, wouldn’t it? By now, the class had already begun, and if there was something more embarrassing than talking to a teacher one-on-one about being absent for a stupid excuse (since Alex wasn’t accustomed to lying very well), it was being made a fool of in front of his class. Since it was small, he knew everyone by name and face, so on top of the humiliation he’d have to endure by his professor, his classmates would give him hell for it.
“No,” he decided out loud. “No, Mister Beater, I don’t really fancy showing up late to class. It’s not very fun when you’re really focused on your grades. Making an impression with your professor is critical, and absences are better-looking than lateness. I’m sure you understand that, same as you understand the love some people have for stargazing.” Indeed, Alex hadn’t been expecting Zane to have neither the book nor the class. He didn’t strike Alex as a person to stargaze…but then again, no one really had the air of a stargazer, so it was forgivable. If he was being honest with himself, Alex quite liked Zane. They only knew each other for a few moments, and it was because he had kicked the Slytherin in the side, true…but compared to most Slytherins, like Scorpius and Skylar, this one seemed normal. “I think I’m gonna head back to my dorm…catch up on some homework due soon.” He turned, making to go to the Ravenclaw dorms, then stopped mid-stride.
“I’m not sure where exactly the Slytherin dorms are…if they’re this way, would it be cool to walk together? I mean, if you’re busy or whatever, that’s fine too…”
Can you guess what Zane is doing?
ZANE, WHAT DID YOU DO.
This is why you can’t have alcohol. EVER.

Of course we randomly torture first years. What else would we do?
I don’t know…by kind to them?
This school would be a lot better if none of you were in it, just sayin’
Well, there goes my smile for today. But despite the crippling depression, I’m still gonna call you the problem. How on earth did someone like you get into a school like this?

Alex pointed right back at him with a deathly serious face. “Don’t tell me what to do.” He stood like that for a moment before bursting into a little laugh. “Ah, don’t worry about that twit Scorpius. He’s just a brooding little guy with nothing much to do but shag and bother his sister. I’m not sure he’d do anything too serious…I don’t think.”
“As to the class, it’s Advanced Astronomy. Like I said, not too popular. Stargazing is boring for most people, but there’s just something peaceful about the stars being free and able to roam on their own. Makes me feel small, yet happy.” He took a deep breathe, imagining the cold air of the astronomy tower at night filling his lungs, wishing he were there now. “Weird, I know…but that’s Alex for you. Weird as a weirsnout.” He glanced sideways at Zane. Since he had cooled off a bit, Alex saw the drooping shoulders and haggard eyes of a stress-burdened guy, and a little kick to the side wouldn’t make him that wiped.
“Okay guy, you look like a dementor just sucked you dry. What’s got your hair greying, if you don’t mind me asking? Apart from Scorpius on your arse, from the sound of it.”
“Ya I agree, but it’s not like I can really fight back. How do I explain that to Lyra. ‘Hey sorry, just put your brother in the hospital wing…Oh well.” Zane reached into his bag and pulled out his astronomy book. “You shouldn’t assume these things about people, they might surprise you.” He closed his bag and looked back at Alex. “This is a very different environment from Durmstrang. There, all I had to worry about was the horrible experiments and spells we would do. Here though, I have Lyra. I’m not sure what is going on in Daisy’s head. I’m waiting for quidditch. I haven’t seen my friend Ryker for awhile. It’s a lot of things.”

Alex was rarely confused, but this was one of those rare times. This student’s emotions were climbing up and down like a spider -sympathy, hostility, rage, then more sympathy - and it was alarming. It wouldn’t be long before this guy popped under stress and hexed someone for no reason, he was sure.
“Uh…trust me, you wouldn’t have it. I mean, no offense, but I don’t think many people take the class…and, um, sorry ‘bout the ribs. Lucky you’re standing, though, elsewise you’d have yourself some broken bones.” He tried to laugh to lessen the tension, but felt that he wasn’t really making himself any less unpleasant. At least he could save face a little…or so he hoped.
“But, uh…for the record, I don’t go on about many people, and Lyra’s not many people for me. We’re not unfriendly or anything, but I’m not really a gossipy type, y’know? I jus…OH!” Alex exclaimed, doing a weird jig as he suddenly remembered Zane’s name. “You’re Zane! Lyra’s Zane, Lyra and Zane, that’s how I know you! I knew you looked familiar mate. I’m sorry, it just took me awhile to remember your bloody name.”
Lyra’s Zane? Is that how people know me now? He thought. He watched Alex’s little dance and laughed. “Ya that’s me. Lyra’s Zane.” He pointed a finger at Alex. “Good. Don’t gossip, or I’ll be coming for you.” Zane had clamed down. He didn’t know why he got so mad, but it was nice to be talkng to someone who didn’t flee the second things got heated. “What class is it, just tell me. The ribs will be fine. Its actually good conditioning for when Scorpius gets a hold of me.”

How the bloody hell does he know my name? The face of this student was quite familiar to him, yet he couldn’t put a name to him. Maybe he had been drunk the night he met the Slytherin, but he wasn’t sure. His could also just be a face that he typically saw in the hallways.
“Yeah…yeah, I’m Alex. Don’t worry about it, just…a little flustered myself, sorry ‘bout the yelling, lemme just…” He scrambled on his hands and knees, scooping up all he could grab, and shoving it all in a disheveled mess in his pack again. The sack looked comically like an overflowing volcano of paper, and it was only after he had stood up, dusting off his robes, did he think that a simple spell could have done the trick for him.
“I’m just in a rush is all, trying to…uh…bollocks.” He noticed that, in the chaos of falling and cleaning, he would never make it back to his common room in time to get to class. “Well, I was running to get a book in my room for class, but now…drat…I’m never gonna make it.” He gave an exasperated look at the man again, trying to remember his name. He wanted to be mad at him for making him miss class, but it was obviously not his fault…or maybe it was. “Enough about that, what WERE you doing on the floor in the first place?”
“My bag split open and my books spilled out. I happened to be picking them up when you slammed into me. By the way,my ribs thank you, they haven’t been hit in awhile.” Zane rubbed his side when Alex hit him. Zane stretched. “Your lucky I dont hex you. The shit go I’ve had lately, well, this is just the icing on the cake.” Zane had no reason to be mad at Alex, but he was there, Zane was mad, and he needed to vent. “Just be lucky you aren’t one of the blokes gabbing on about Lyra. If you were you’d be taking classes in the hospital wing for a few weeks.” Zane picked up his bag and opened it. “What book do you need, I might have it.” He could tell Alex was confused over his attitude.

The hallways were quiet. Zane walked the halls of Hogwarts like a phantom, making even less sound than the Grey Lady of Ravenclaw. He carried a bag full of books and kept his wand at his side. He was uneasy for some reason and needed to clear his head. Hogwarts had turned his world upside down and he needed a way to bring himself back to Earth. Anytime he heard even the slightest noise he jumped to attention. Zane walked for what felt like hours. His mind constantly racing. The hallways grew darker as he walked on, and Zane heard a click. His bag popped open and all of his books poured out. “Bloody Hell.” He bent over to pick them up, hearing footsteps approaching behind him.
Alex was in a hurry. A real big hurry.
He normally was opposed to running in the halls unless there were dire emergencies. Forgetting a spellbook was certainly not an emergency, but he wasn’t about to let himself get into trouble with his professor just because he didn’t want to double-back. He sprinted around a corner, looking over his back to see the small Gryffindor staring at her with shocked eyes.
“Sorry to scare ya!” he yelled, “but I’m in-“
It was then when Alex’s shins rammed into a very solid object in the middle of the floor. He landed face-first, feeling his face sliding painfully along the ground floor. His knapsack burst open, spilling several large books and an ink bottle that surprisingly didn’t smash. After a moment of getting his tea-kettle over his arse, he sat up and looked round at the Slytherin he had tripped over.
“Oi! What’s the big idea, taking a nap in the middle of a bloody hallway?”
Normally Zane would have been calm, nice, and helped the person he had a hand in hurting. Tonight wasn’t a normal night. “What did you just say to me you little punk!” Zane reached for his wand but recognized the face. It was the guy from Lily’s party. He kept his wand at his side and looked at Alex’s spilled bag. He lightened up. “I’m sorry.” Zane picked up one of Alex’s books and waved his wand at his own bag, books neatly putting themselves away. He handed Alex the book. “You’re names Alex, right? Sorry for jumping down your throat. It hasn’t been a good few days. Where are you heading in such a hurry?”

OOC: Alright, I’m back from hiatus.
Yeah. Finally. Only took me a week.
So I really have never RP’d before using Tumblr. I’ve used discussion boards, but never this. It’d be more than appreciated for someone to help me a little bit with getting started?
